After looking around, Holmes, Dario Meli, David Tedman, and the other of the Invoke team couldn’t find a product with all the features they were looking for. So, they decided to make their platform to organize their social media accounts and networks. At first, this social media control system was just a Twitter platform called BrightKit. It came out on November 28, 2008.

    Holmes thought that BrightKit might help other businesses manage their social networks because he saw that many people and businesses around the world had the same problems with handling multiple social accounts. People liked the official launch of BrightKit.

    In February 2009, Holmes held a contest with a $500 prize for changing the name of the platform. The contest used ideas from the more than 100,000 people who use the dashboard as entries. A user called Matt Nathan came up with the winning name, Hootsuite. It was based on the dashboard’s owl image, “Owly,” and is a play on the French phrase “tout de suite,” which means “right now.”
